2021 Water Meter Replacement Program

Program Overview

The City of Chanhassen is upgrading the water meter reading system starting in the fall of 2021. The city will be replacing approximately 4,500 residential water meters with radios and another 2,300 radios on existing water meters under this program. The city's goal is to provide residents with more accurate and timely information about their water use and create a better data collection system throughout the city. The program will continue until all applicable replacements are performed, which is estimated to be completed by July 2022.

The city is contracted with Ferguson Waterworks to install the meter and radio replacements. Information about Ferguson can be found here.
Affected properties will initially be contacted via mailings to start the replacement process. The meter and radio replacement cost is covered by the city at no expense to the resident or property owner. Water meter replacement is required by ordinance. Replacement Process

Step 1: Schedule An Appointment
Ferguson will send you a letter when it's your turn to have your meter replaced. The letter will explain how to schedule an appointment. If you don't make an appointment, a follow up notice will be sent.  

Overview of Meter Replacement Appointments:

  • Replacements typically take no longer than 30-minutes.
  • Your appointment can be scheduled Monday through Friday between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. 
  • Requires an adult (ages 18- years or older) to be on-site during the replacement.
  • Ferguson will comply with all applicable city and CDC guidelines for potential COVID-19 exposure mitigation. 

Step 2: Prepare Your Meter
Ferguson will need to enter each residential home and have access to your meter. Before your appointment, please clear a path to the meter and clean the area around it. The technicians will not be able to start working on your meter replacement until everything is cleared away. 

Step 3: Verify the Installer
When the installer arrives the day of your appointment, verify that the installer works for Ferguson (on behalf of the city) by asking to see their badge. If someone says they are an installer and you do not have an appointment or the person can't show you the proper identification and badge, call 911.

Step 4: Here's What Happens During Your Appointment:

  • Your water service will be turned off during the installation.
  • After your new meter is installed, you might hear air in the pipes when you turn on your faucet. Run cold water to remove air from the pipes.
  • The city will recycle your old meter and reading device. 
  • The new meters measure water use more accurately. Depending on the accuracy of your current meter, you may see changes to your monthly/quarterly bill.
